Passive Voice

      1. DEFINITION

There's two 'voices' of verbs, the first one is Active Voice and the Second one is Passive Voice. But in this article we only learn about passive voice.

The passive voice is a grammatical construction. The easiest way to explain it is by contrasting it with the active voice. The active voice is the standard English sentence structure. With passive voice, the subject is acted upon by the verb. For example:

  • Active: Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.
  • Passive: The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci.

     2. FORMULA

Usually, active sentences that can be transformed into passive sentences are in the form of active sentences containing transitive verbs (verbs that require a direct object) such as make, bring, buy, write and so on.  Conversely, passive sentences that contain intransitive verbs (verbs that don't require a direct object) such as cry, swim, go, arrive, and die cannot be converted into passive sentences.

However, if the intransitive verbs is followed by a preposition, there is a possibility that the sentence can be turned into a passive sentence but the passive sentence will be very stiff.

A passive sentence consist of:

  • The subject
  • The verb to be in the correct tense.
  • The past participle of the verb needed.
  • Sometimes, the agent and/or other complements

Each tense has its own passive voice which is created by using a form of the auxiliary verb to be + V3 (past participle)

     3. EXAMPLE

Here's some examples of Passive Voice:
  • Active: We have reanalyzed your figures in order to determine the range of error. We will announce the results when the time is right.
  • Passive: Your figures have been reanalyzed in order to determine the coefficient of error. The results will be announced when the situation is judged appropriate.

  • Active: Enzo completed the process, which was essential for the experiment’s success.
  • Passive: The process, which was essential for the experiment’s success, was completed by Enzo.

  • Active: Justin is eating the cake that I worked on all day long.
  • Passive: The cake that I worked on all day long is being eaten by Justin.
